oy ...

IGN has the stupidest gaming related feature ever. A "Top 99" list compiled by readers. Sounds harmless right?

Here's how they did it. IGN has a huge database of game titles from past and present, and members can add them to their game collection and, if they choose, submit a reader review or score. The morons simply counted the games with the most and highest ratings, took a few quips from the forums and made a feature.

The result? You've got Starcraft somewhere in the 70's, while God of War, a game not even out for a month as number 6. Resident Evil 4 is your number 1, and there's some strange game called SNK VS Capcom Match of the Millenium, which doesn't exist (geek fact: If you must know, there is a game called CapcomVS SNK Match of the Millenium, and yes the name switching does matter, since there is an entirely different game called SNK VS Capcom: SVC Chaos).

An absolute waste of keystrokes and mouse clicks. I'm not even going to bother linking to it.

So I just found out that one of my Dreamcast memory cards went on the fritz. Not only was a huge chink of memory seemingly missing, but so were a few saves. After deleting some unecessary stuff, swapping files between my two cards and a total purge of the offending device's memory I got the space back and organized the remaining saves for the future. The only major loss was my Marvel VS Capcom 2 save, in which I had unlocked all of the 52 fighters availible. Guess its back to square one.

w...t...f

Now I know that in the history of Star Wars there have been many, many stupid items of merchandise. But for me this takes the cake. Who would ever think they were remotely cool wearing that.

Oh, and for the price of a new video game you can buy a barrel of oil.

I just finished my "final" cs project of the year, although I still have my bonus Hunt the Wumpus to complete. Still, that means I have a few days of relaxation time before the finals swing in (most of mine are at the very end). That means I am going to either go outside and actually enjoy the sun for a while, or sit in a dark room and play videogames with my girlfriend.

Either alternative would be very much enjoyable.

Shiny

I know there is one person out there who will drool over this one measly screenshot of Serious Sam 2.

Mets won last night, and tied the Braves up for the division. If they can split the next two games in this series then they'll be good to go.

So for my extra credit project in CS 302 I'm attempting to write my own version of the classic PC game Hunt the Wumpus. Shouldn't be impossible, but I hope I have the time. If it works I'll surely put it up for download or make it a webapp or something.

The results

SO the tournament wasn't quite as well attended as planned, but I can't call it it anything but a success. Nothing was lost, the players seemed to really enjoy it, and the competition was fierce. I even got to sneak to the back and play some Dreamcast. All in all, eveyone won. Will it happen again next year? Definitely, though it may end up being with Halo 3.

Apparently there's a new Director's Cut version of the movie Triple-X with eight extra minutes of footage. I honestly want to know if anyone could possibly want the director's cut of Triple-X, let alone one that is longer.

One of these days I am going to comment on the new Shadow the Hedgehog game and Sega's decline in the new world of gaming. Until then, enjoy ArmJoe(or at least enjoy trying to figure out what it is. I'm not telling.)

Halo 2 Tourney is today. Lotta work to get it done.

I'll let you all know how it is.

Apparently former NYC mayor Rudy Guiliani will be speaking at Loyola College's graduation. That's pretty tough to beat. Knowing my luck the class of 2007 will get some random freelancer from the New York Times.

How's this for a Student Government Association: our SGA president was recently removed for inviting underage students to a party and charging them entracne fees, and is still practically running the show (apparently the new Pres still doesn't have keys to his office). Now the sophomore class president will probably be removed after fighting with the campus police and eventually being arrested.

Just goes to show you how token and worthless college politics are, and just how scarily similar they are to the real thing.

New music!

I rarely ever buy a music CD these days. Part of it is because I find few discs I want, part of it is becasue I've amassed a huge collection of tunes I want just by ripping CD's from friends (I can count on my fingers how many songs I've gotten from P2P networks).

One band that is the exception to the rule is Millencolin. This sweedish punk import is rather grassroots in the US, but I've fallen in love with their funky fast style since I heard them on the Tony Hawk 2 soundtrack. I got their new album Kingwood in the mail today, and while I've only given it one serious listen through, it seems promising. Most of the tunes are in the fast, lighthearted style of their older work, but the album much more focused than their past efforts. There are the usual catchy numbers, the songs that grow on you after a while, and the wild cards that you're kind of impartial to. The only problems I have are that the hard, rock-focused sound from their last album seems to be absent here, and after so many albums their strange blend of optimistic/angsty lyrics are a little too familiar.

Until I give a few more listens and really get a good feel for the tracks, I can't quite rank Kingwood, but at the very least it seems to be another solid Millencolin album. Good Show.

Hardcore?

Something must be wrong with me.

I love fighting games. 2D fighters to be specific. I have a shit ton of them for Dreamcast. And I'm still looking for more.

I really don't know why I am though. I love to play them, and when I get into a groove, I don't pick up anything else. But those grooves are rare. And actual competition is nonexistant, because no one gives a crap about dusty 2D relics. So most of those games are just sitting there, waiting to be played.

Perhaps even worse than the fact that I'm still hunting is just what I am hunting for. The only two games I really need to complete the collection are Capcom VS SNK 2 and at least one of the King of Fighters games from 2000 on. These can all be found on the Playstation 2 for 30 bucks or less (and the KOF games come in two game compiations), and are easy to find online. Picking up a PS2 this summer and all these games would be a cinch, and the console would still be good for other titles.

Instead of doing this, I'm looking to buy Japanese imports of Cap VS SNK 2 and KOF 2001 for about 40 bucks each. I don't even know if I'll understand half the menus since they'll be in Japanese. Why the hell do I have the desire to go this more expensive, somewhat stupid path?

I think my hardcore gamer blood is starting to affect me in a bad way. I'm becoming a Dreamcast purist, who wants the games for the system, import or not, rather than getting the translated and much cheaper versions on another console. And why? Is it "hardcore cred"? I've yet to meet anyone who would take a look at my collection and have some newfound respect for me. Am I just trying to back up all my talk about being a serious gamer with evidence that no one will care about? I really don't know, and I'm not buying anything right away. But I really wonder if I'm acting crazy, or just "being a fan"

Edit: Speaking of fighters, there's a new review of a kind of old game on LC1201. I've had this sucker sitting there forever, and I finally got a chance today to type it up. I'd also like to point out that the actual address www.lc1201.com might not work for the next week. I just renewed the name, and found out that Bravenet is using a new registrar, so until the name is transferred to them it may or may not work. You can always get there by going to justice.cs.loyola.edu/~cmwolfe of course.

Stumbled upon this

So I discovered that one my of CS prof's kid has a webcomic. It loads kinda slow and I don't understand it, but pimping must be done. I could use some bonus points in Programming Languages next semester

I hate stupid quizzes and surveys most of the time, except when they're right.

Psychonauts Demo

So how did the demo of Tim Schaeffer's new platformer play out?

Firstly, the platforming is business as usual. Jumping, climbing, swinging and whatnot, as you collect tons of trinkets (though not nearly as many as in, say, a Rare platformer). Its well enough made, though I don't know how long it would entertain after enough levels.

Everything else about the game is ... interesting to say the least. The style of this game is, well... indescribable. A bunch of freaky looking psychics traveling into people's minds in order to protect our thoughts. Of course, this leads to some great comedy pieces as only Schaeffer can make them, and a very unique style to all of the environments. The first actual level, well... you really have to play it to appreciate just how much attention to detail there is to every little corner of the map.

And of course, the visuals are very sharp and the voice acting very solid, as seems to be par for the course with Tim's games.

Just download it and see for yourself. The actual gameplay is perhaps just "good enough",but the rest of the game is so damn trippy and crazy. A huge breath of fresh air in the genre.

Edit: Better provide a link for the curious.

We won!

The Mets have finally won a game, and then... they won their home opener today! That's 3 more to go in order to break even.

The new Xbox will be debuted may 12, and on MTV no doubt. Can't say if this is a good or bad thing in terms of attracting teh right audience, but I mighy actually watch MTV for something.

Possible prototype of the Xbox 2 controller? It could be a possibility, considering it looks very much like an old sidewinder.

The Red Sox had their home opener today against the Yankees. not only was the championship banner raised above the eyes of their mortal enemies, but the Sox won the game by a lot. Most excellent.

I'm currently downloading the Psychonauts demo at a very slow pace. Considering its made by Tim Schaeffer, I've got very high hopes

Sega Fantasy VI

What happens when you take the story of Final Fantasy 6 and replace the characters with game consoles? The finest Flash animation ever. A warning though; you really REALLY need to know your gaming lore to realyl appreciate the jokes and references abound. Its also rather long.

random entry

Jack Nicklaus played his last Masters tournament this year. My grandfather was a huge golf fan, and taught me of the greats like Palmer and the Golden Bear when I was young, so its rather sad for me to see him go. His departure after not making the cut was silent and uneventful, just the way he wanted it. Still, it seems like a more fitting sendoff should occur for golfing's great.

China hates Japan... still. No surprise there.

Apparently there were people who fell for this. I cry on the inside.

Losing Streak

The Mets have lost their first three games. Please tell me this is not foreshadowing. I gotta calm down, gotta stick with them...

This has once again been a hell of a week, especially with the nice weather. As much as I like the sun and warmth, I'm just as comfortable in typcial geekspace; dark, cramped and quiet. But when a heat wave comes this soon after winter it feels like a lost oppurtunity when you're stuck in labs.

Weekend is here though, which means time with the girlfriend and a chance to continue playing Skies of Arcadia. I shouldn't like that game half as much as I do but, well, I do.

woot

There's a regular feature on Gamespy in which the editors tell what games they've been playing. The last page is where reader entries are included. Check out the first included reader.

I'm so proud of... me.

Lets go Mets!

Its baseball season folks, and I've got my Mets cap ready (actually, I've had it ready all winter, but now its game time). As fate would allow it, even in Orioles territory I'm still surrounded by Yankees fans (Loyola's student body is a the very least 25% long islanders), but I remained undeterred.

Class registration is fast approaching, and I'm ready to go. 3 CS classes take up the majority of my time, which is actually a good thing as it means less distraction from other subjects. Macroeconomics and American Literature round it out. Best of all, my first class is at noon.

Finally, hats off to Game-Revolution for the absolute best April Fool's prank of the year. Imagine if it was real...

Edit: Mets loose by a run. Looks like the bullpen blew it bad. We lost a lot of games last season because of relief pitching, and I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

error

So I posted some about some news yestserday, and apparently some Blogger errors it they never appeared, and now that news is old. Ah well.

Its sort of wierd, but I think that my Computer Science class is where my worst grade is currently. I'm not really sure why, other than a lack of time. My understanding of the content is solid, but late projects have hampered things, and it turns out I used focused my study time for the latest exam on the wrong topics. Should I do well this last month of classes I should turn out OK (OK meaning maybe a b-), so I'm hoping to pull things through with the rest of my classes.

Today our school paper issued an April fool's issue. The big joke: the front page "news" that the creators of the O.C. would be doing a spinoff based on Loyola College (which actually makes sense if you saw our student body). The biggest joke: people fell for it. A lot of people.

Let's all pray for the pope everyone.
