Its Green

For a very long time now I thought that my green Playstation memory card (AKA the one that has all of my Final Fantasy 7 saves) was missing, lost to a room that I will never see again. I believed this to be a sign that I should stop trying to beat a game that I hate so much.

It turns out the card wasn't lost. It was simply tucked in the corner of the Kohl's bag that my Dreamcast games are still sitting in.

Is this another sign? If it is, perhaps I will ignore it.

-Kingdom Hearts 2 is coming out soon. I'm bracing for the inevitable internet impact that will come once all the fanboys/girls get their copies and begin to worship their new god. Actually, I'm actually considering making a trip to Blockbuster so that I'll be able to fight fire with fire. Scary to think that I might torture myself with yet another Kingdom Hearts, but hey, I do it for the kids.

-Starcraft Ghost - canceled? Looks like it may be so. Prepare for some commentary on this by the end of the week.

-I think tomorrow is a good time for a rant on SNK and their recent announcements. Let's just say I'm not very pleased.

-Baseball. Soon. Let's go Mets.

-2nd annual Loyola College Science Dodgeball Tournament. Wednsday. Let's go computer science.

Videolamer.com

Remember a few posts back when I said I absolutely needed to get a new review finished? Now I get to tell you why. About a week ago I was contacted by a nice blog/gaming site called videolamer.com about doing some writing for them. Finding the site to be well made and well written, I gave it a shot, and submitted a write up on the orignal NES Dragon Quest. The experience was incredibly positive; the site's admin Jay really knows his stuff when it comes to gaming, and he has a lot of ideas for the future of site. He also did a fine job formatting my review. Furthermore, his interest has sparked some true motivation in me. It has only been a week since finishing the DQ review, and I'm already beginning another, which I believe is a first for me.

So for the time being, any new gaming related articles or reviews will be found at Videolamer (with links provided here of course). Of course, I'll still be updating this blog at the same frequency and with the same content as before. All that is changing is that the lc1201 mainsite is going to be somewhat abandoned. It had a nice little run, but it is too undervisited and poorly designed for it to be a good place to host anything (though I'll be keeping backups just in case).

Anyway, I'm really excited about this turn of events, and I hope it works out well. You can find a direct link to the Dragon Quest review here if you wish to read it. Enjoy.

Why?

I don't understand Sony fanboys. I never have, and I still can't after lots of pondering. Their latest act of ridiculousness? Believing Sony's numerous claims that they'll be able to manufacture 1 million PS3's every month as if it were the word of the Lord himself, and constantly reminding us in every message board in every corner of the internet

Now I'm not saying it is impossible, but let us look at the facts here folks. The PS2 launch had incredible shortages. The Xbox 360 just launched to shortages due to manufacturing issues - and the PS3 is even more complex in its design, featuring two brand spanking new technologies (blu-ray and the Cell chip). Furthermore, Sony is absolutely notorious for their fluff, hype and outright bullshit.

Fortunately, a large part of the gaming press is actually realizing these things for a change, and thus are becoming skeptical of any Sony-made claims until they can prove it. Yet the consumers themselves still seem to eat up everything fed to them while selectively forgetting things like the Sony rootkit fiasco, the inevitable blu-ray DRM and the bullshit that was the Emotion Engine.

Is it blind hope, or just loyalty gone too far? If I had to choose, I'd take Nintendo fanboys over these guys any day. At least those guys are content.

The More you Know

Today was a day of life lessons. After paying my cell phone bill and shopping for groceries, it dawned on me that my bank account is at its lowest since I opened the damn thing at 16. It honestly felt a little scary, knowing that at this very minute I have only 200 bucks to my name, no line of credit, and not a clue as to when the next big expense may come around (as in a real expenses; entertainment and beer will continue to be a no-go for a while).

Yet in all honesty, I shouldn't be worrying at all. Tomorrow my folks will be depositing some money to pay me back for old groceries and medicine, and even half of a the parking permit fee I payed almost a year ago. This friday should see a new paycheck (its been a while), and my April Tax return is going to be rather significant after getting nothing back last year. In short, if I stay frugal until Easter time I should be back to where I was at the start of the semester.

This of course made me realize that, while I do pay for a lot of things that most college kids don't worry about, I'm still incredibly fortunate to still have the support of my family for things like food and extra large Loyola College bills. In only a little over a year I'll be out on my own, feeding myself and writing even more checks to people. Of course, I'll also have a full time job, but today made me realize even more that eventually the bills will come faster and harder, and hard work and wise spending will be critical to get through it all.

So I guess the lesson learned is "don't slack off in college. A little bit of laziness now can lead to a lot of scraping by in the future."

PS - a lot of people ask why I hate most Square games. I need only point you to this to find out why.

Shot of Whisky

It is the end of the week. Amazingly, I didn't forget anything on my laundry list of things I had to do. Unfortunately, I was also unable to finish it all. I had a feeling that would happen, and to be honest I probably could have put in a little more effort on certain days. Guess I have the weekend to redeem myself.

I also need to finish one of the six or so reviews that I have begun, hopefully by Monday. There's an actual reason for it, which you should hopefully find about soon.

Hope everyone had a happy Saint Patrick's day.

1st day back

It was 80 degrees today in Baltimore, though they say it is going to get colder quick. I refuse to believe them after such a lovely day. At least if it does get chilly I don't have to worry about missing out on any good weather due to my workload.

I started playing KOF '02 today in order to properly analyze it for review. I was able to beat a Time Attack challenge which I previously thought to be impossible, then immediately proceeded to complete Team Attack mode on my first try. My theory about getting better at a game by putting it away for a while continues to gain evidence....

Tonight's episode of 24 was one of the saddest things I've seen on Television. I also decided that the show happens to be the best thing I've seen on TV in years. I curse myself for not checking this show out earlier.

I found out that the two friends I went to spring break with got food poisoning today. One of them still hasn't come home. I'm feeeling a mix of worry for him and myself (what if I get it?), as well as some relief that I didn't eat those Boardwalk Fries yesterday. Hopefully everything turns out alright.

Status Report

Things I Learned During Spring Break
by
C. Wolfe

1) Delaware has very wierd highway signs
3) Connecticut and Massachussetts really do have that New England Charm.
4) New Hampshire is like a mini Pennsylvania, not only in how it looks, but in how it operates with things like liquor laws. NH still beats out Penn however, for the sole reason that getting to civilization from the middle of nowhere takes only fifteen minutes instead of half an hour or more.
5) Everything I thought I knew about skiing turned out to be wrong. Once I learned the correct way to do things, I found it to be an incredibly enjoyable activity - that's way out of my income bracket for anything outside of spring break. At least most skiiers seem to be helpful and friendly folks.
6) I really do suck at any game -video or tabletop - that involves strategy.
7) Providence is not the best place to visit on your way to New York.
8) Long Island (which I swear is home to half of Loyola's student body) is a really nice place, and a seemingly expensive place as well. I can see why many students are so damn well off.
9) Keggers really can be fun.

Psst...

Hey there everyone. I'm still alive. Spring Break has been very enjoyable (and damaging to my bank account), though it isn't over yet. I'll return with a better report sometime tomorrow, since I have a feeling that the best stories will be made tonight....

Furthermore, looks like nothing spectacular hit the 'net during my hiatus. A couple of missed comic strips to read and a few small news tidbits were all the catching up I had to do. Seems the most buzz happens to be over the impending release of Final Fantasy 12 over in Japan. This time I think I'll stay away from the oncoming debates and arguments about the series, and simply wait for the handful of voices I know of that can honestly and critically review an FF game to do so. Perhaps it will turn out well after all.

Spring Break

Yes, it is finally spring break, and yes, I'm actually heading out somewhere. I'll be spending the next week as far away from the warmer climates as possible, as I hurdle down a mountain on two pieces of wood (which I haven't done in over a decade). Wish me luck.

Unfortunately, this also measn the blog will be on a week hiatus, unless I manage to find some computer time. If not, the I'll see you all next Saturday/Sunday. Take it easy, enjoy the time off (and if you're a someone in the real world, good luck with work

DS Lite

So the new DS model goes on sale today in Japan, and as everyone expected, it sold the f#%@ out quick. This is partly due to Nintendo having some manufacturing troubles, and partly because the demand for the console in Japan shows no signs of going away. This is both good and bad for the Big N: bad because the shortage may create some lost oppurtunities, but good because it has been a long time since a Nintendo console has kicked so much ass at retail. And to think it is the DS, the most twisted device out there. I'm glad to see it though, because it could mean great things for the Revolution.

I also dislike the use of the word "lite" in the naming of anything. Has it ever actually been a legitimate spelling of the word, or am I right in saying it just popped up in the last decade thanks to advertisements?

This has been a pretty horrid week before Spring Break. Literally, at any point this week there were at least ten different things that I could be doing that don't involve procrastination, and like a good boy I actually did them. Hats off to anyone who had papers, exams, or whatever to get done before Friday. I saw a lot of hard work being done, and I hope it rewards everyone. Except for the punks that left on Wed. evening/Thursday morning. Lousy good for nothings...
